About Barberspan Bird Sanctuary
Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is one of Southern Africa’s largest and most significant waterfowl sanctuaries. Spanning an area of 2,000 hectares, this vast body of water has earned RAMSAR Convention accreditation, highlighting its international importance for migratory birds and waterfowl. The sanctuary is a key stopover point for birds migrating along the West Coast and plays a critical role in preserving a diverse range of species.
Located between Sannieshof and Delareyville, on the N14 highway, Barberspan is easily accessible and just about three hours’ drive from Johannesburg. This large, permanent water body lies in the fossil bed of the Harts River and is surrounded by a series of pans that support an extraordinary range of wildlife.
The sanctuary is home to over 365 bird species, with more than 12,000 individual birds recorded here. During the dry season, Barberspan becomes an oasis, providing shelter and food for large numbers of waterbirds. You might spot the White Faced Whistling Duck, Black Winged Stilt, and the Little Grebe—species that make this sanctuary a favourite for keen birders.
A Birdwatching Paradise
Barberspan’s rich biodiversity is due to its status as one of the few permanent water sources on the western highveld. It serves as a vital habitat for a wide range of birds, including flamingos, pelicans, grebes, terns, herons, cranes, ibis, and bitterns. Remarkably, all but one of South Africa’s duck species have been spotted at the pans. The diversity and sheer number of bird species make Barberspan an essential stop for anyone serious about birdwatching.
Barberspan is also an excellent destination for those who enjoy exploring by boat. Visitors can explore the waters in canoes or rowing boats, particularly along the southern section of the pan. Birdwatching from a canoe offers a unique and peaceful perspective of the sanctuary, allowing you to get closer to the birds in their natural habitat.
Aside from birdwatching, Barberspan is a popular spot for anglers, with several regional and national fishing competitions held throughout the year. You can camp along the angling shoreline or enjoy the sanctuary’s walking trails, which offer a chance to stretch your legs and take in the surrounding beauty.
The sanctuary is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00 and is clearly sign-posted from the N14 highway, which links Delareyville and Sannieshof.
